Ramin Hossein Panahi, a 24-year-old Kurdish Iranian citizen, was sentenced to death on the 25th of October for ‘acting against the national security & membership of a political opposition party’ because he met up with individuals to inform them about human rights issues. Recently, on the 25th of January, his case was again ‘reviewed’ by the Iranian authorities, after which was decided he would be executed within the coming days. Ramin was shot and arrested on Friday June 23th, 2017 in Sanandaj Iran, after meeting with individuals to inform them on human rights issues. After his detention, he was denied medical access as well as visitation rights and his family was not informed on his whereabouts nor his medical status. After 124 days and 23 requests at different governmental branches, Ramin’s family was still uninformed on his whereabouts. On the 26th of October, after informing once more about Ramin’s status and whereabouts, Ramin’s mother and sister were informed by the Iranian authorities that Ramin was awaiting his death penalty and that they would be informed after his execution.
Several days after Ramin’s arrest, the Iranian authorities also detained 3 of Ramin’s family members: his brother, Afshin Hussein Panahi, his brother in law, Ahmad Hussein Panahi, and Zobeir Hussein Panahi, after they pressured the Iranian authorities to provide information about Ramin’s medical status and whereabouts. All three were sentenced to imprisonment for respectively 9, 5 and 6 years, following an unjust trial on the 25th of October, 2017. Currently, Ramin, his brother and his father of 78 are on hunger strike to raise awareness for Ramin’s case.
Over the past few years, thousands of Iranians like Ramin have been executed following unjust trials. Opposition is strictly forbidden in Iran and those that want to speak out against the regime are often times detained and executed as a result. Immediate action must therefore be taken to pressure the Iranian government to release Ramin and his relatives.
